As I did a very intensive 6 page review of X-Plane 8 in the December 2005 issue of our Magazine "PC Flight", I may as well add a few comments here. While some users may find it an alternative to Microsoft's Flight Simulator, especially in its life-like flying capabilities, I concluded that I'd much prefer FS. X-Plane's scenery was dreadful as I found it to be mostly unrecognizable and had not even a basic resemblance to FS's default world scenery. While it came with lovely and clear aircraft panels, the exterior of the planes themselves were only passable as some windows were not transparent, with just blobs of grey or black, and no pilots could be seen inside. Pilots could, however, be observed within some military planes.  Overall, I found the planes to be a little on the dull grey side and could not be compared to the magnificent aircraft provided by FS.
Recently, as one of our members was showing an interest in X-Plane's latest version 9, I made a few comments. Later, to check it out for myself, I decided to download X-Plane 9's FREE Demo and gave it a go. I still did not like it and decided that I'd still much prefer FS versions FS9 and FSX. If you would like to try X-Plane 9, visit www.x-plane.com where a link to the demo can be found.

Hi George,
You should see the scenery on the sim at Weston. If you think X-Plane is bad!!!!! However at least it is an alternative as I am not aware of any others. I must try it on a machine with Ubuntu Linux and see what happens. That being said as a procedural trainer it is quite good but not here yet in the scenery department. Also at least Austin attempts to patch things whereas MS just decided after the release of the Xpansion/S Pack that that was that. Sorry no more fixes etc we are moving onto the next version, even after their own Service Pack caused problems.
Loved you latest article,
All the best,
John.

Hi All,  You can hear a very interesting interview with Austin Meyer of X-Plane and Laminar Research using the link in todays edition of Avsim.  Just click on any of the links on the third article down and you will be there.  It lasts about one hour but it is very very interesting and well worth the time. Regards Rex
